Caiarossa, Pergolaia, 2020

The Pergolaia 2020 from Caiarossa is a blend of mainly Sangiovese 70% with small amounts of Merlot 14% and Cabernet Sauvignon 10% to give it a ‘little more belly’ as Jérôme Poisson the general manager told me. This is a friendly, spicy Tuscan version of Sangiovese which is juicy and bright. It is a beautifully made wine with very refined and well-integrated tannins that feel almost invisible. It takes a while to open up on the nose but when it does there are plenty of dark bramble fruit and blackberry aromas with a touch of cream and spice of oak. Beautifully smooth on the palate, it is concentrated without being heavy with flavours of dark cherry and spice that wrap around each other, mingle and intertwine in a lovely harmony. Drink from 2023 to 2029.
