Visit with Daniele Dinoia owner of Villa Guelpa to the Trincerone vineyard in Boca yesterday in Alto Piemonte – his vineyards are at 480m asl surrounded by woods with porphyry soils. The rules of Boca DOC oblige you to blend nebbiolo with a % of local and traditional varieties. According to @intoitalianwine for Boca DOC you can use 10-30% of either uva rara or vespolina. Daniele uses only 10% of vespolina which gives a spicy, peppery character to the wines and combines well with the red and black cherry fruit of nebbiolo producing round, soft full-bodied wines with gentle tannins. There are only between 17-18 hectares of vines in Boca DOC so you will be lucky to find a wine from here to try but some of the Villa Guelpa wines are sold at @theatreofwine in Greenwich in London so you might be lucky. The wines are also sold through @batandbottle in the U.K.
